JACK SPARLING~ NYOKA WEEK

For later period Jack Sparling work~
check out Mykal's GOLD KEY COMICS !
blog. And get used to seeing samples of
Jack Sparling Nyoka stuff from the 1950's,
because all this week TCD is busting out a
complete storyline from Master Comics 50-
58. One thing I really love about this period
of his work, is that it seems like it was drawn
& inked quickly~ not sloppily rushed~ but in
a manner that directly reflects the passion of
the illustrator to tell the story. A heavier brush
perhaps gives this impression~ but there's no
denying the final product is sensual and lush~!
ps: the 1st strip is the only one from micro-fiche~
procured from the ever useful Golden Age Comic
Downloads site. The rest are all color corrected
and tweaked paper scans.

SUNDAY FUNNIES~ BUZ SAWYER REMIX BY ROY CRANE

Can I get a Buz at the buzzer ?! Almost
missed our weekly Sunday Funnies post
due to a little trouble on life's highway~
literally ! Today was a pre-Thanxgiv'n
travel day that went from a normal 10
hour drive into a 22 hour bypass ! But
thanx to patience, AAA, and a great
garage in NC that's open 12 hours a
day 7 days a week~ we can bust out
some Roy Crane to celebrate arriving
safely at our destination. The Buz
Sawyer comic is like a lot of other
comic strips that jumped into print
using this new-fangled four-color
format, in that~ the splash panels
tend to be 'original' art, found only
in the comic books, and the rest is
re-edited reprints of weekly strips.
I am making an exception here~
because technically this post does
not contain Sunday Buz Sawyer
material~ yet~ being in glorious
color with craft-tint shading is
so dang cool~ I am bending the
rules like Captain Kirk on a
Priceline vacation !

SATURDAY MATINEE~ WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE

Everything happens in cycles... A true
examination of the 52-year cycle Mayan
calendar reveals THIS to be the strongest
of their astronomical beliefs. The current
popcorn flick '2012' is not the first, nor shall
it be the last, DISASTER film. Oh, sure~ it
may purport to have cranked the genre up
a notch~ but it just isn't true. 'When Worlds
Collide' is an earlier masterpiece of this genre,
in that~ it really gets one to think'n~ what the
heck would we do if the entire planet was actually
threatened ? And delves into~ very realistically~
the various human reactions to our multi-species
impending doom. I am not sure offhand which came
1st~ this 1952 classic or the controversial book~
'Worlds In Collision' by shunned scientist/kook
Immanuel Velikovsky. It is a fascinating read~
and covers a myriad of occult topics while it
straddles scientific speculation. If you're one
who simply enjoys literature that ignites
your imagination~ despite sketchy topics
and unprovable hogwash~ then I highly
recommend making a B-line to your
local used book nook. The artist for
this amazing Fawcett production
is not listed in the Grand Comic
Database~ but the style seems
so familiar... Please comment
if you suspect who the culprit
may be~ Lysdexicuss
p.s. Nibiru & Nemesis are discussed extensively by Ufologist
Zecharia Sitchkin (sp?) in several of his books, along
with ancient knowledge passed down by the
Summerians~ and it all kinda ties in with
this resurgent doomsday hoopla, for
those of you with a morbid curiosity !

EVERETT, SEVERIN, SINNOTT~ WW1 IN HD

Three great Atlas artists hitting the peak
of their artistic powers in the early 50's~
Bill Everett, John Severin, and Joe Sinnott.
One thing really cool about the comic all
these tales appeared in~ WAR~ is that~
it covered a variety of wars throughout
History, highlighting the drama, tragedy,
heroism, and overall senselessness found
in every era of humanity's commulative
experience. Besides being entertaining~
it offered the artists & writers a real
chance to flex their talents. Enjoy~!

HY FLEISHMAN~ UNIQUE WAR COMICS

Hy Fleishman art is never GREAT~ but it
does have a unique look... His work has the
feel of someone who is self-taught, yet~ he
did attend a couple of Art schools after
serving in the Navy. His figures always
seem squashed or squat. (In my own case,
as a self-taught artist, I struggle to draw
tall thin people. They are always 'average')
Hy Fleishman's strength appears to be in
his inking~ it really creates a wonderful
3D effect~ some figures just seem to pop
out at you. Plus, he is one of many from
that era bold enough to try using craft-
tint or zippatone textures & patterns
to enhance the mood and depth. He
worked for many companies during
his comic art period, but his output
was minimal~ usually doing fillers
or back-up features. Enjoy~!
